Resistance to Change Assignment

Blanca and Ramona (2016) present the results of a quantitative study to discuss the concept of change and resistance to change within the context of an organization. The authors concede that change has received much attention as an organization imperative while considering the implications of performance as well as the multidimensional nature of any organization. In fact, the article concedes that organization change is best achieved by considering the different components and processes that constitute the organization. Also, it mentions that the competition and complexity inherent in environments within which organizations operate identifies the need for change as part of progress even while considering that change is intended to achieve improvement. Besides that, the article concedes that labor force dynamics must be considered in discussions about change, since this is critical for culture, process, structure and strategy improvements. Resistance to Change Assignment

Given this awareness, the authors concur that any one of these elements could be leveraged to act as resistance to change although most resistance is reported within the labor force dynamics. As such, the study justifies its focus on personnel as a unique source of resistance to change. The article then goes on to personnel involvement in change is not a simple process with every aspect of their involvement having different nuances and implications that could range that could include cynicism specific to the change, which could be interpreted as a lack of integrity. To further the discussion, the researchers applied the Change-Specific Cynicism Scale that was validate by a Canadian population in 1998. The scale was then adapted for a Romanian population. The results of the study determined that the scale has high internal consistency (α=0.84) to imply that change specific cynicism is a valid concept and the scale can be applied across different populations to measure the concept as a reflection of resistance to change within an organization. The article is useful in understanding resistance to change within an organization and the position that cynicism presented by personnel plays in the resistance.
