Describe the role of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as it pertains to the PMHNP.

The DEA is the organization mandated by the federal government to manage access and distribution of chemical substances that have a high potential for harm that could include drugs. In fact, the role of the organization focuses on protecting the public from harmful substances through controlling their distribution, sale, access, storage, use, processing, cultivation/synthesis, and any other activity concerning these substances. Of late, the role of the DEA has been synonymous with addictive psychotic substances to include marijuana, heroin and opium. Concerning PMHNP, the DEA extends its role into psychiatric practice although it is more concerned with ensuring that medication intended for treatment purposes are used responsibly. This implies monitoring PMHNP to ensure that controlled medication are only used when necessary having explored other treatment approaches and determined that they would be less effective. It also ensures that medical personnel assumes responsibility for safe use of controlled medication through valid prescriptions that can then be used as proof of safe prescribing (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2010). In this respect, the DEA has the role of ensuring that PMHNP practice safe prescribing.

Explain your responsibilities when having a DEA number.

As a medical personnel, having a DEA number is a tacit agreement to practice safe prescribing. Similar to other identification numbers, the DEA is a unique number assigned to each medical personnel to distinguish them from all other medical personnel. The number accompanies all prescriptions to serve two functions. Firstly, it acts as an identifier for the medical personnel who wrote the prescription so that he or she would be contacted in case there are any issues with the prescription. Secondly, the number acts as proof that the medical personnel is qualified and legally permitted to write prescriptions (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2010). In this respect, any medical personnel with a DEA number has the responsibility of guaranteeing safe prescription by ensuring that only qualified persons conduct prescription activities as evidenced by the presence of a DEA number.

Explain how you apply for a DEA number.

Applying for a DEA number is a stepwise process and a requirement for all medical personnel who intend to write prescriptions. It is especially needed when using prescription medication that have a high potential for harm or abuse. The DEA has set up a three-step procedure that applicants must follow to get a DEA number. Firstly, all applicants must have a current and valid practicing license with the services indicated in the license being within the scope of prescribing controlled medication that have a high potential for abuse or addiction. Secondly, the applicant must have a valid and current permit to handle controlled medication. The permit is acquired from law enforcement agencies as evidence that the applicant is not likely to engage in criminal activity that could include illegally trading the controlled substances. Finally, the applicant should approach the local DEA registration office with copies of the license and permit to make an application for a DEA number that would only be valid for three years after issuance (CompHealth, 2018) PMHNP and DEA Discussion Paper.

Explain your state’s requirements for a safe prescribing and prescription monitoring program.

I am a resident of Texas State. The prescription activities in the state are managed by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. To ensure that all prescription activities are safe, the board has set six conditions that must be met. Firstly, the person writing the prescription must have a current DEA registration number that would then be printed on the official prescription form. Secondly, the prescriber must have an up to date and a valid practicing license issued by the state with the information contained in the license matching the information presented in the DEA registration file. Thirdly, the prescription should include an office phone number. Fourthly, the prescriber should have a driver license issued by the state to validate the prescription. Finally, the prescription should have a current email address for the prescriber, although this is kept confidential and only used when seeking further information concerning the prescription (Texas State Board of Pharmacy, 2018). Other than the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, the Texas Health and Safety Code also sets conditions that must be met to ensure safe prescribing. The code indicates that a prescription should only be written when necessary within medical practice and for a valid medical reason. Also, all prescription activities should be supervised and written by licensed and practicing medical personnel (Thomson Reuters, 2018).

Explain your responsibility as a PMHNP to follow these requirements.

As a PMHNP, I have the responsibility of following the state requirements for safe prescribing. Firstly, I must have a current DEA registration number to accompany all prescriptions I write. Secondly, I must have a valid and current license that allows me to practice in the state. Thirdly, I must have an office phone number that would allow for voice contact. Fourthly, I must have a current Texas driver license to validate the prescription. Finally, I must have an email address to validate information exchange concerning the prescription, especially when there are questions to be answered PMHNP and DEA Discussion Paper.
