Reflection
The exercise in which I conducted a personal interview with a patient was an informative learning experience on how to acquire information with care implications from patients. In fact, the experience made me realize that a medical interview is a versatile diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Firstly, it adds to other diagnostic tools through developing a clinical hypothesis that would direct time-efficient, more productive, and cost-effective use of laboratory modalities. Secondly, it acts as a therapeutic tool through helping in establishing a positive relationship that lessens the patient’s feelings of helplessness and bolsters the sense of self-esteem thus acting as a good foundation for ongoing patient care. As such, I learned that an interview is a diagnostic and therapeutic tool Medical interview reflection.

Unlike other interviews, a medical interview that allows the patient to express uncertainties and discomforts from illness, while the medical personnel get to clarify the problems the patient experiences while deriving diagnostic and therapeutic values. Despite knowing the intentions of the interview, conducting one was a challenge. The most difficult aspect was how to maintain a balance between my agenda and the patient’s agenda as I was too directive in questioning. I found it difficult to facilitate the patient’s spontaneous reporting while actively directing the conversation, a challenge that could cause the interviewer to miss important information. I understand that although this is not a problem unique to novice interviewers, it has negative implications for the interview results. I intend to address this shortcoming through two approaches. The first approach is regular practice to develop better interviewing skills. The second approach is applying a structured approach that begins with recognizing the problems when it occurs, applying clinical reasoning to identify the cause of the problem, and developing an appropriate solution that is then applied Medical interview reflection. Overall, I now understand that an interview is an important health care tool that can help medical personnel in planning for and delivering care.
