In the state of MA, you get certified as an APRN after the individual have graduated from a program preparing you for a practice as an Advanced Practiced Registered Nurse. The individual have successfully completed the completed the certification process in one or more clinical categories. Apply for board authorization to practice (Board of Registration in Nursing MA, 2021). A graduate must provide a proof of current RN license, official transcript from your education program, official transcript must state that the education program prepared you for practice as an APRN in specific clinical category you are applying for, proof of graduate course work including pathophysiology, advanced physical assessment and pharmacotherapies. The individual then apply for APRN certification from any of the approved board certification organization; American Nurses Credential Center.

To apply for APRN board authorization certificate, one has to complete the MA APRN Authorization application online, request official transcripts from your educational program. MA is s restrictive practice state that is regulated by the state board of registration in nursing and board of registration in medicine. License requirement include; RN license, graduate degree and national certification Practice Authority: a written collaboration agreement required between the NP and the supervising physician. This agreement must be mutually developed and agreed to by the physician. Eleven items must be included in the agreement including the scope of the APRN’s prescribing practice and the types of medication that may be prescribed, Mass . Reg. Code 243-2,10 (5). MA state allows nurse practitioners prescriptive authority for drugs falling into schedule II, III, IV, V ( (Board of Registration in Nursing, 2021).

6. How do you get DEA license in your state?

In the state of MA, an authorized or certified APRN contacts the Drug Enforcement Administration registration center for an application by calling 1800 882 9539. The DEA application requires the APRN indications on the type of activity the APRN intend to conduct. Application for registration is made for one of the following groups of controlled substances activities which are deemed independent of each other. Completed application are to be mailed to U.S. postal  service address listed on the application with an application fee. (Board of Registration in Nursing, 2021).

The MA Drug Control Program Prescription Monitoring Program database (PMP) serves as a repository of data for all federally (and specified state) controlled substances medication dispensed in MA and to MA residents from out of state mail order pharmacies. MA PMP receives data dispensation data on commonly prescribed opioids such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone, etcetera. MA PMP receives data on all commonly prescribed benzodiazepines (benzos) such as xanax, valium, klonopin, stimulants such as Amphetamines, Dextroampetamines; opioid partial agonist such as methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone (Commonwealth of MA, 2021). 

8. How does your state describe a nurse practitioner’s controlled substance prescriptive authority and what nurse practitioner drug schedules are nurse practitioners authorized to prescribed?

An individual must have board authorization as an Advanced Registered Nurse to apply for prescriptive authority.  Before you can prescribe, you must have less than 2 years supervised practice, establish prescriptive practice guidelines with a supervising qualified healthcare professional, signing on attestation when applying for a Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration (MCSR) that has been established, you have completed a minimum of 2 years supervised or 2 years independent prescriptive practice, enrolled in MA prescription program through Department of Public Health. MA state allows nurse practitioners prescriptive authority for drugs falling into schedule II, III, IV, V ( (Board of Registration in Nursing, 2021).
