As a long-term nurse that has worked in different hospital systems, I was introduced to many different electronic charting systems like Meditech, Cerner millennium, and Epic. From my experience, the new systems are much more efficient and have easy navigation. Their software assists in EMR and CPOE, which integrates the patient’s history, lab data, radiological tests, biological data, and any other notes made of them. It uses these to fire alerts such as SIRS or critical lab values.
Though informatics is an essential technology, many challenges exist around it. Methods of instruction or training become an issue when it is implemented through quick crash courses or self-training, especially for those who do not have much experience in computer technology. Most of the time, educators stress charting one’s routine and creating procedures when it comes to rare occurrences. There is also the scenario of the resource pension not being available, such as in the one that I worked at having only one clinical specialist available.
Older nurses and physicians may have a limited skill set when it comes to computers and could fail to change their work habits. Nursing is always inter-dependable with other departments. The experience that other professionals have is important when it comes to obtaining the optimal result. Physicians with limited knowledge or low accountability lead to higher workloads and delays treatment. Another issue comes up during downtime and when it is not expected, the patient care is on pause. For example, there would be no way to look up the patient’s medication or treatment plans, which could lead to errors in accumulated activities.
Nurses are not prepared or technologically acute since they spend as much as fifty percent of their time in documentation. Limited time dedicated to patient care is another issue and it becomes elevated when using mobile computers. Nurses often face difficulties in their organizational roles, interactions, data descriptions along with software and hardware issues. Technological problems are prevalent as well, including unreadable barcodes, upload failures, and inaccurate printing. Most of the time, MAR (Medication Administration Record) is linked with medicine dispensing systems like Omnicell. When it is not coordinated, access to even life-saving medicine is denied.
Strategies for Improvement
Detailed training is one of the many key strategies that can be utilized, incorporating continuous support along with it. There is 24/7 online technical support in my workplace while the nurse informatics works for only a portion of the week.
CPOE is another important strategy that can be used by the physician. It needs to be improved by providing additional training and accessibility to records. It is a job that comes to nurses on the side when they need to enter the orders without the presence of an emergency.
Computers that are built into the patient’s room improve the synergy between the nurse and patient and create productivity. For example, the nurse can be in the patient’s company when recording the daily assessment and required documents and can increase the ensured accuracy. Most of the time, wheels on computers stop working when you move to the rooms, waiting for the system to respond. This decreases productivity and wastes time, causing nurses to lose sight of the patient amid everything happening around them.
Impact of Nursing Information as a specialty.
“The overwhelming presence of technology at the clinical bedside has the power to become the strongest reference point that nurses use to inform, direct, interpret, evaluate, and understand nursing care ” (O’ Keefe. McCarthy, P. 787). New technologies such as smart pumps, barcode medication administration systems, electronic health records (EHRS), wearables, and smartphones are being introduced into practice environments, increasing efficiency, promoting safety, and streamlining the nursing work. For example, vital signs are being sent to the EHRS from the vitals machine, reducing the burden of entering data manually. Similarly, doctors and nurse notes, as well as lab and procedure reports are available in the EHR. Allergy warnings can save a patient’s life. Abnormal lab values are flagged. Changes in biometrics fires warning like SIRS or prompt for covid tests are benefits of NI. Scanning the patient and the medication ensures safety and also reduces errors. Using electronic pumps assists in calculating the rate of the drip, saving time and making the process more efficient. Telemedicine is the current trend in nurse informatics which provides immediate and efficient care in supporting patients. Considering the scope of their benefits, the NI field is going to grow continuously and become an integral part of the nursing field. The application of NI in nursing is what makes me believe that, when you blend science with caring, you become an expert (unknown author).

Informatics has enabled fast relaying of information, which has, in turn, improved the patients’ outcomes.
One strategy on how these interactions might be improved
The best strategy that should be put in place should be improving the communications practices between the professionals. The best way to improve communication is by, for example, reducing the number of hand-offs between nurses. This could involve working with a 12-hour shift other than an 8-hour shift. Errors that could come about due to misunderstanding and accuracy are minimized, that interaction is improved.
Impact of the continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty and/or the continued emergence of new technologies might have on professional interactions
The professional interactions will be enhanced as there will be an increase in mutual respect and trust between health workers. With this nursing informatics and the emergence of new technologies, nurses can provide information based on present research based on evidence-based practice to provide physicians’ accurate inputs. Nurse informaticists play an important role in analyzing data to enhance patient care while helping the healthcare organization implement present patient-care technology. As specialists in applying, accessing, and collecting data, nurse informaticists work together with other specialists on a daily basis to confirm that appropriate data is accessible (Riemann, 2020, p. 25). The nurse informaticist in my present healthcare facility helps other healthcare professionals to make effective decisions while taking actions that support the general welfare of patients. Medication errors related to hospital discharges can become a problem and lead to increased readmissions. A strategy of minimizing medication errors includes implementing and involving pharmacists using MUMMS software, especially, during post-discharge transitions. The present pharmacist in my facility utilizes Enclara Pharmacia software and is not connected to the software of MUMMS. According to Martin, “a pharmacist driven interference should concentrate on patient education and medication reconciliation after discharge to enhance medication utilization and decrease health care cost” (Martin, 2019, p. 67). Therefore, employing MUMMS software would empower care providers with a secure and comprehensive program that is flexible to use.
The effect of technological advancements in both hardware and software focus on providing accurate and updated information to healthcare providers. According to Whiteley, “Critical information can definitely prevent medication errors and mistakes from occurring such as administering discontinued medications beforehand” (Whiteley, 2017, p. 11). For this reason, professional interaction will benefit superbly from new technology by minimizing healthcare costs, reducing preventable deaths, improving efficiency, while upholding life quality.
