Instructions – Module 10 – Reflection Paper

Overview

For the Reflection Paper, you will be applying concepts to identify a behavior that you would like to change in your own life and create a self-management plan. You will have the opportunity to evaluate your plan and reflect on this process, discussing strengths and challenges you identified in the process. Be sure to read the Reflection Paper details found in the Resources for Major Assignments module before getting submitting this assignment.

Task

You will complete a self-management plan in six steps (listed below) from Weeks 7 – 10 and write a 4 page reflection paper based on your plan and experiences with behavior change.

Step 1: Choose the target behavior that you will focus on increasing or decreasing, and determine how you will define and measure this target behavior.

The target behavior I decided to focus on for my Reflection Paper is dedicating a daily time slot uninterrupted for school assignments and my weekly tasks for that specific week. I want to avoid allowing distractions or procrastination during the week. At times I allow it to distract me from completing my assignments and I need to rush at the end of the week to catch up. I think this will allow me to balance my time between work, school and my leisure time.

I will implement a one person contract because I plan to schedule dedicated time (2 hour daily slot) for assignments with no distractions. As it’s a personal agreement I think a one person contract is the best option for the behavioral contract. The contract will entail maintaining a weekly log with the time slot dedicated to my assignments and the assignments that I worked on/completed during that time. Failure will be determined if I do not meet assignment deadlines. If I miss any deadlines or assignments are not completed I will need to use my leisure time to make up. This will force me to stay accountable as I will need to sacrifice time for other activities to complete my school work.

My target behavior is time management/procrastination.

I will measure my target behavior with a weekly log tracking the 2 hour time slot dedicated to assignments.

The consequence will be loosing time dedicated to other activities being used to make up for my failure to meet my target behavior goals.

My roommate will help to keep me accountable and ensure the consequence is implemented.

Step 2: Identify 2 – 3 cultural factors/identities (Hays’s ADDRESSING framework) and/or systems (Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model) that may influence the target behavior and/or the antecedents, consequences, and possible functions of the target behavior you have identified for the Reflection Paper.

Step 3: Record baseline data on your target behavior.

Use 4 days a week from May 16th – June 3rd . Use past data taken as an example to craft the data needed for the assignment. Note data needs to be crafted to fit assignment requirements.

 Step 4: Identify 2 – 3 self-management support strategies you will use for your self-management plan.

One behavior I would like to change in my life and on which I decided to conduct my reflection paper is dedicating a daily time slot uninterrupted for school assignments and my weekly tasks for that specific week. I want to avoid removing distractions and procrastination, which sometimes prevent me from using my intended time for school from using this time appropriately. I believe this will have long-term benefits for my college career going forward. I have started this change by turning off my phone and not visiting any websites unrelated to school work when I am working on assignments. By implementing this behavior change, I have noticed that the urge to seek distractions has reduced. As I continue in this behavior, I am optimistic that I will focus on school work when working on assignments without the need to avoid distractions consciously.

The target behavior I identified for my reflection paper is dedicating a daily time slot uninterrupted for school assignments and my weekly tasks for that week. I hope to decrease the wasted time on distractions and procrastination and use my time dedicated to school work more effectively. A systemic factor that I foresee as a potential challenge in meeting my goal is not being able to maintain the change in the long term. My schedule is full typically, and it is challenging to try to balance school, work, and life commitments, which I think will be a challenge to maintain the change. I believe I will need to maintain awareness of my goal and proactively ensure I maintain it long-term.

Step 5: Implement the strategies you identified in Step 4 and record data on your target behavior.

Step 6: Using the Reflection Paper template, write your paper using the information you have prepared for your self-management plan, as well as evaluate your plan and behavior change and reflect on this process.
