Treatment strategies

Two other treatment options are available to children and adolescents. The first option is to prescribe medication to achieve immediate control of symptoms presentation. Unlike other treatment approaches that control the symptoms through progressively influencing thought processes, psychotherapeutics achieves immediate control of symptoms through changing the brain chemistry resulting in a chemically induced change in thought processes, perceptions and feelings (Cautin & Lilienfeld, 2015). The second option is the use of physical restraints with appropriate application and complication, particularly for patients who present a high risk of self-harm or suicidal ideation among agitated patients. In such cases, physical restraints are applied even as verbal de-escalation strategies are implemented along with medication to address the agitation. This is to ensure that the patient is not offered an opportunity to worsen the situation (Wheeler, 2014). In this respect, prescription medication and physical restraints should be considered as treatment strategies available for addressing the psychiatric needs of children and adolescents. Cultural influence

Other than the possibility of a language barrier thus requiring a translator, culture can also influence personal perception and interpretation when conducting the psychiatric assessment. To be more precise, cultural differences exist in nociception so that whatever one cultural group would consider as abnormal would be viewed as normal by another culture. For instance, some cultures would consider delinquent behavior as a lack of discipline while others would consider it as a development or personality disorder. This means that the medical personnel must recognize that cultural values and norms could differ whereby each patient would present divergent viewpoints, developmental frameworks, and values to define the problem thereby influencing the diagnostic results. This would, in turn, affect decisions about the course of treatment to be undertaken (Sadock, B., Sadock, V. & Ruiz, 2014).
