It is estimated that for every human cell, there are nine microbial cells associated with an individual. That means that 90% of the total number of cells found in the human body is not human. The microorganisms that are associated with the human body, the microbiota, include both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Human skin, which as you know forms the outer covering of the human body, is colonized by more than a billion microorganisms.  While most of these organisms are harmless, others can make you sick (especially if they can break the surface of your skin and enter into your body).  Below is a list of some of the microorganisms that are known to make up the normal skin microbiome.
