An analysis of how management and leadership roles differ

The roles of management and leadership considerably vary in terms of supporting an organization to set and achieve goals. The aim of managers is to maximize efficiency through organizing staff, but the aim of leaders is majorly to inspire and influence employees. Additionally, the job of a manager is entails planning, delegation, organizing and coordinating while the job of a leader entails guiding and motivating their employees (Patelarou & Vlasiadis, 2015) Scully (2015) argues that leadership entails offering support to clinical colleagues and decisively enlisting enthusiastic and willing colleagues, motivating followers to change themselves through talents development and creation of mutual relationships as well as incorporating the role of management. Specific characteristics of effective managers and leaders

A nurse manager of a medical-surgical unit recognizes that one nurse usually slept during her night shifts and assumed a role in dealing with this problem. The manager got the nurse to admit her mistake and consequently alter his behavior. The manager didn’t listen to nurse’s thoughts so as to recognize the concerns and needs of the nurse. Patelarou and Vlasiadis (2015) argue that that being an effective manager requires conceptual, human and technical skills. Conceptual skills reflect the capability to think critically, analyze and establish strategies so as to manage problems while technical skills entail capability to perform a particular task. Human skills are linked with the capability of a manager to collaborate and communicate with others (Patelarou & Vlasiadis, 2015).

In the same scenario, the assistant manager took a leadership role and sought to understand why the nurse slept during night shifts and probable remedies for it. The assistant nurse manager actively listened to the nurse and asked him to express his opinions without being defensive. Leaders should have crucial qualities like risk-taking, selflessness, ability to communicate, vision, integrity, visibility. A leader influences others to comprehend and reach agreement on what needs to be done and the way it should be done, and facilitates collective and individual efforts to achieve shared goals (Xu, 2017).
