For this Assignment, you evaluate an issue and consider how you could act as a moral agent or advocate, facilitating the resolution of the issue for a positive outcome.

Consider your leadership style, including your strengths for leading others and include your results from Kiersey Temperament Sorter to describe potential challenges related to your leadership style.
Mentally survey your work environment, or one with which you are familiar, and identify a timely issue/dilemma that requires you to perform the leadership role of moral agent or advocate to improve a situation (e.g., speaking or acting on behalf of a vulnerable patient, the need for appropriate staffing, a colleague being treated unfairly).

Nursing practice is involved with multiple ethical, moral, as well as legal issues. Ethical issues are based on the perspectives of society or group of individuals whereas moral aspect depends on what is right and wrong. On the other hand, legal leadership is governed by the laws. Professionals such as healthcare providers use ethics and professional codes laid down in their practice to respect, protect, and defend the basic rights of individuals involved in nursing and healthcare (Barkhordari-Sharifabad et al, 2017). Leaders promote ethical and moral leadership by modeling ethical performance. Additionally, moral and ethical leadership involves diverse moral values and individual beliefs that assist leaders in laying down the foundation for ethical and moral leadership. Ethics is an essential component of the nursing profession and good morals and ethics signify good leadership. Legal leadership ensures that the stipulated laws are adhered to; this avoids many ethical and legal problems (Barkhordari-Sharifabad et al, 2017).

Generally, nurses are required to adhere to ethical, moral and legal duties required by their practice. The ethical component includes the socially accepted conduct and behaviors that professionals and people should follow in different circumstances. Moral aspect refers to individual characteristics, beliefs, as well as the motivations of nurses that help them in undertaking their responsibilities (Aitamaa & Leino-Kilpi, 2015). Nurses are required to adhere to the prerequisite of making sure that the stipulated ethical, moral and legal duties are followed. The moral beliefs, personal ethics and their motivations normally guide the behaviors of nursing professionals during their practice (Esmaelzadeh et al, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to present an ethical dilemma that I encountered during my work environment and analyze the moral, ethical, and legal implications using in this situation. Ethical Dilemma

During my practice as a student nurse intern, I encountered an ethical dilemma where I had the dilemma of disclosing a patient’s medical condition. As I was on duty, a patient aged about 65 years was brought to the hospital by her husband and her daughters. The patient underwent various medical tests including biopsy. The biopsy results came out after one week and the husband and daughters accompanied the patient to come for the results. The oncologist analyzed the results and revealed that the patient had stage 4 ovarian cancer. I was given the duty of disclosing the results to the patient and explaining the documented findings. I had the role of breaking news to the patient and the family and making sure that the patient was psychologically ready to accept the reality the cancer diagnosis. However, while the patient was resting in the triage, the husband and the daughter came for the result. After reading the medical results, they were shocked and the family requested me that I should not reveal to the patient regarding her diagnosis because this would traumatize her and break her down. I was faced with the ethical dilemma of telling the truth to the patient vs. being deceptive. As a healthcare provider, I was faced with the dilemma of considering the right of patient to know and at the same time take into account the family’s request. As a nurse, I had the obligation to tell the patient the truth, and at the same time ethical principles of non-maleficence and fidelity obligated me to prevent harm.

Moral, Ethical, and Legal Implications

Personally, I knew I had the moral and ethical obligation of telling the truth to the patient about her diagnosis and at the same time consider my own value of truth-telling. According to Esmaelzadeh et al (2017) telling the truth to the patient regarding their condition can help in better management of patient’s condition and at the same time prepare the patient for the end-of-life stage. As much as I considered the family’s request, I knew I had the ethical obligation of telling the patient the truth and helping the patient to the best of my knowledge. Morally, I understood whatever the family was going through and their concern regarding the adverse impact the diagnosis would have on the patient. Legally, I was aware that as a healthcare provider I am not supposed to share sensitive medical information. Accordingly, as a nurse I had to make a decision that was to the best interest of the patient and act within ethical, moral, and legal considerations of the esteemed nursing profession.

My leadership Style

When I faced the ethical dilemma, I knew I had to use my leadership skills. My preferred leadership style is democratic because it facilitates decision-making in nursing practice. Accordingly, I decided to seek opinion of my peers before making any decision. This is in line with Kaiser (2016) who advises that it is important to get the insight of experienced peers especially who had faced a similar experience like mine. Three nurses advised me to follow the family’s advice while the other five nurses advised me to have the patient counseled privately and then break the news of her diagnosis after the counseling

Decision to the Dilemma

I took into account advice and opinion from my peers and after the analysis, it was evident that the majority opined I should disclose the news but in a professional and moral manner. The majority had opined that I should ensure the patient was counseled regarding cancer diagnosis and informed about the available treatment options. After 2 hours of deliberation and following majority of my peers’ advice, I called the patient into the office with the family; they were all counseled and then I disclosed the diagnosis. We held a long discussion that enabled the patient to accept the diagnosis and adhere to the treatment regimen, as she planned and prepared for the end-of-life phase. Analysis of the Applied Leadership Style (Democratic Leadership Style)

Democratic leadership style was extremely useful during this incident. This is because this leadership style availed the appropriate decision to the ethical dilemma. Democratic leadership style involves taking insight of different people and weighing the available options in order to come up with the best option (Khan et al, 2015). The responsible nurse makes the final decision when using a democratic leadership style. Accordingly, I applied democratic leadership style and took into account views of my peer nurses and I discovered that majority of the nurses supported my moral decision and hence I concurred with the views of the majority. This is in line with Khan et al (2015) who provide that democratic leadership style is vital in availing solutions to problems. As a result, I decided to reveal the truth to the patient, and counsel her and the family regarding the diagnosis and the appropriate coping mechanisms. I even referred the patient to a cancer support group to enable her get moral support from people going through the same situation.
