ANA Decision Tree for Delegation

Delegation Paper: 125 points (5-7 pages):

A paper is required covering learning outcomes from the clinical portion of the course. This paper must be a minimum of 5 pages long, typed and double-spaced following APA format. A minimum of three peer-reviewed journal references are required. See grading rubric. This assignment must be submitted via Safe Assign. The student must include all of the following based on their clinical experience.

A. General Information

● Describe the facility and the nursing unit where the student was assigned
● Review the mission statement and address the statement in the paper
● Make a notation of the code of ethics.
● Identify the delivery model used to provide nursing care (i.e. team nursing; primary
care, etc.).

B. Assessment

● Mission statement – is there evidence of administrative support of mission? Is there evidence during patient care? Give examples of both.
● Manager – leadership style, describe his/her problem-solving style and give an example including outcome of the decision. If not in direct contact with the unit manager, discuss preceptor leadership style. Was the style appropriate for the circumstance? What was the response of the staff?
● Communication approach of the preceptor with staff, other disciplines and the reaction of the recipients.
● Preceptor – leadership style, describe his/her problem-solving style and give an example including outcome of the decision. Was the leadership style good for you? Give an example.
● Time organization of the preceptor – how well does the team work?
● Does the preceptor engage in quality assurance processes? If so please describe the process and role of the preceptor?
● What type of communication approach does the preceptor use with team members and or other disciplines?
● What professional organizations does (or did) the preceptor support? Was he/she involved? If not part of an organization, is there a preference?
● What impact did it have on his/her practice? If the preceptor was not affiliated with a professional organization, why?

C. Plan

What nursing skills have been most helpful to you in this new role?
Attach examples or explain what information you researched to give competent care
(pathophysiology, medication, policies, procedures, etc.). In other words, prove that
you give professional care.

D. Implementation

Review the facility and the ANA Decision Tree for Delegation. Did you delegate as a team leader with staff or other departments? If so include the process of delegation.
Did the facility follow the Delegation standards?

E. Evaluation

● Analyze the appropriateness of the delivery model used by this facility
● Analyze the coordination of the care and your participation in coordinating functions. Give at least one example.
● Did you give care according to the standards of practice and the nurses’ code of ethics? Give examples (2 minimum)
● Did you give care based on the mission statement? Give examples
● Student leadership style – what leadership style did you use at the beginning of the clinical and what style was more prominent at the completion of the clinical rotation? Was the style appropriate for the team members? The situation? Would another style have worked better? Give examples (2 minimum)
● Student problem-solving or decision-making style. Describe the process and give an example, including the outcome. Would you do anything differently if faced with this situation again?
● Student communication approach with preceptor, team members, and other disciplines
● Student time organization – describe your time plan and how it changed as the clinical progressed
